How to Get Started on the Practice Wiki Site

This is a tutorial for getting started with the Practice Wiki. The tutorial will be begin with starting a new General page, adding the appropriate tag, and some text. Every type of addition that can be added to that page is generally called a ‘block’. There are also ‘patterns’ which is a group of saved blocks, but this tutorial will only cover the text, image and video blocks.

All pages will have the tag: ‘wp tutorial’.  The group ‘WP Tutorial’ will include all pages with this tag.

1. Go to Log into the Wiki Practice Site (https://training-dev.flddc.org/wp-login.php)

2. You should be at the back-end Desktop. Click on My General.

3. Click on Add New.

4. Type the Name of the page where it says ‘Add General’. The title will be: How to Get Started with the Practice Wiki

5. Click on the ‘General’ tab on the toolbar on the right side of the Settings toolbar and scroll down to Tags.

6. Press the Tags dropdown.

7. Begin typing the tag for the page.  As you type, existing tags that contain the letters you are typing will appear in the dropdown.  When you see the tag you want, click on it, or type the entire name of the tag and press the Enter / Return key to ‘set’ it.  The Tags box will now look like this:

8. If you are starting the page with text, just start typing in the box below the title.

9. To start a new paragraph, press the Enter / Return key. Alternatively, you can click on the + below the text and select the paragraph icon from the popup box.

10. When adding a numbered list, DO NOT let the system begin the list if you plan to use any images between numbers on the list.  Unlike Word, you cannot continue the numbering after the image.  The numbers will start over again with ‘1.’  Instead, type 1, then a period, then the spacebar.  The system will assume you are starting a list and indent. The word ‘List’ will appear.

Press the undo arrow at the left upper portion of the page.  The 1. Will remain, but the indent will disappear, and you can then add numbers manually for each item. Tip: Add the numbers after you have otherwise finished creating the page, since you will have to re-number after inserting any left out (faux) ‘list’ items within the page.
